Transfercase

The transfer case that originally came with my truck was a Spicer 18. It was still in my truck when I purchased it and was mated to the crappy Ford toploader transmission via an adapter. Since I decided to ditch the Ford 260 in favor of a small block Chevrolet, for reasons you can read about on the "engine" link, I was left with the decision of keeping the Spicer 18 or going with a Chevrolet ready transfer case (e.g. New Process 205). When I looked at the price of adapters to mate the Spicer 18 to any Chevrolet transmission, I went into a state of shock. These adapters are EXPENSIVE! With that in mind, I decided to use the venerable NP 205. An aquaintance had a spare NP 205, freshly rebuilt, that I picked up for a song. These transfercases are absolutely massive and bomb proof. The down side to the NP 205 is the gearing. The low range is 1.98:1 which is rather pitiful. Currently there is not a single manufacturer (that I can find) that makes lower (numerically higher) gear sets for the NP 205. There is a manufacturer that makes a kit (I believe it's called The Doubler) that uses about 1/2 of an NP 203 and bolts it to your existing NP 205. This kit is also expensive so I decided to focus my attention on finding a 4spd transmission with a "granny" first gear.
