I got the idea for a matching trailer for my truck many years ago when I saw a for-sale ad at Capitol Jeepers Supply in Sacramento for a Willys PU and matching trailer. The combination of a Willys PU and matching trailer really caught my attention and ever since that day I've wanted a matching trailer for my PU.
In November 2004 I found a decent bed from a early J series PU. I bought the bed with the idea that I would build a frame using new or used steel. However, with the current price of steel I discovered that it would be cheaper to start the trailer project using a Willys frame. As luck would have it, the same guy I bought the bed from also had a derelict Willys PU frame that needed a good home. We worked out a trade and I became the proud owner of a rusty frame, Spicer 53, and some obviously wrong rear leaf springs.
I was quite disappointed to find that the original springs were replaced with a pair of springs that are too short by about 2". Anyone have a set of used PU springs that need a good home?

Today I went to the wrecking yard in search of parts for the rear axle. I don't plan to use the stock Spicer 53 as it currently sits. I like the idea of having a full float trailer axle. So my plan involves using a set of spindles, hubs, and rotors from a 1987 Ford Bronco. Pictured above is the pair of rotors that I pulled at the wrecking yard today. Since I won't be needing locking hubs I decided to grab a pair of end caps from a late 70's Wagoneer (also shown in the picture above). Once I graft these parts onto the Spicer 53 housing, I'm going to cut out the differential housing and replace it with piece of large tubing. To provide additional strength, the tubing will be sleeved from the inside.
