How Many Ways Can You Ship A Car?

By T Kearns

Amtrak has been shipping cars for decades and the service is now called Auto Train. You drive your car to the nearest Auto Train depot and you can ride along with your car. When you reach your destination, you claim your car and the head out to your final vacation spot or new employment. Auto Train can carry cars, SUVs, motorcycles and other types of vehicles. Auto Train is available from the Washington, DC area to just outside of Orlando, FL.

There are many companies that do nothing but ship vehicles. These companies generally employ the open transport method that you see on the highways stacked with cars going to car dealerships. They will probably offer closed container vehicle shipping as well like the ones used to transport race cars from track to track. It will generally take from one day to two weeks to deliver a vehicle to its new location.

Auto transportation companies will ship from the location you choose to the destination you specify. You can also transport your vehicle using the terminal shipping method. This is less costly than the door to door transport mode. The terminal shipping is also one of the few ways to ship an inoperable vehicle. All it needs to do is roll, brake and steer.

The actual mechanical condition of your vehicle has no impact on the cost of the auto transport if the minimum requirements are met: Rolling, Braking, and Steering: these are the three minimum requirements for shipping your car via these types of shippers. If there is no way to control the vehicle, another option must be explored.

If you are relocating along with your furniture and personal items, you are allowed to ship your car with them. Cars, mini-vans, pickup trucks and boats can all be transported to your new location by most van lines. Two requirements that all transport companies insist upon is that there be less than one-quarter of a tank of fuel and it must be free of any fluid leakage, such as oil, antifreeze or battery acid. If your car suffers from any of these ailments, you must fix them before you hand it over to the auto shipper.

If you are not concerned about putting the mileage on your car, some owners opt to hire a professional one-way driver to take their vehicle to the final destination. Generally, you pay for the driver’s daily wage for each eight-hour tour, pay for the driver’s meals and any overnight accommodations along the way.

When the driver delivers your car, if it is late in the day, you will need to provide another room for the evening. Also, unless the driver has another vehicle to pick up in your new town, you will be purchasing one-way airfare to get him or her back to the point of origin. During these economic times and with so many people out of work, you may have a friend you trust for this important task.
