The grill of a 56 1/2 model year PU is rather interesting and rare. It's the only model year where the middle grill bar is moved upward about 2/3 of the height of the grill. To get an idea of what this looks like, take a look at one of the early pictures I took of my truck.
The only grill bar that is missing in the photo shown above is the top grill bar. Thus, only three grill bars are present on a stock 56 1/2 PU grill. Also note the lack of a heater duct hole below the passenger side turn signal. The heater duct hole did not appear until the 1957 model year.
It may be difficult to discern from the photo above but this grill was in bad shape when I purchased the truck. The work that would be required to restore this grill was beyond my skill level at the time. During the reconstruction of my truck, I decided to use a replacement grill, although a later model, that was provided by the previous owner. The design of the replacement grill was common to all Willys PUs and Wagons from 1957-1964. When I swapped grills, I kept the large turn signals from the 56 1/2 grill and installed them on the replacement grill. All that is required for turn signal swap is drilling new holes for the mounting screws. Before and after photos of the replacement grill are shown below.
