The gas tank is something that comes up a lot in Willys related discussions. In case you haven't noticed, these trucks are OLD! It's not too surprising that the gas tanks on many of these old Willys are rotten after all those years of use and abuse. Many people go to great lengths to restore the original tank, especially those who intend to keep their Willys completely stock. I will not discuss the restoration of an original tank here because I have never restored a gas tank. If you're looking for gas tank restoration techniques, try searching through the WT archives.
Since gas tank restoration is not the topic here, what am I going to discuss is my solution to the second most common complaint regarding Willys gas tanks, size. Yes, size does matter. Especially if you're running a gas guzzling V8. For my gas guzzling needs I chose to use a gas tank from a 1978 Ford Econoline van. I got the idea from a page in the gallery section of Rick Grover's website, Willys Jeep Trucks.
The Ford tank will fit in a Willys PU if you rotate the tank 180 degrees and weld in new mounting brackets. The tank must be rotated because the fuel filler tube on a Willys PU is on the passenger side while the Ford Econoline has the filler tube on the driver side. Unfortunately, the filler tube hole on the Ford tank will not line up perfectly with the filler hole in the side of the Willys PU bed. I used flexible fuel filler tubing to accommodate this offset. The pictures below show the Ford gas tank that I installed in my Willys.
