Here's another creation from Jim Vanderway. On a 11/11/01, I made a trip over to Jim's house to work on my door panels. Ordinarily, making door panels for a Willys PU or Wagon is well within the abilities of the average weekend garage warrior. However, in my case I wanted the WO symbol sewn into the door panel and that was not something I could do easily.
My door panels were made from 1/4" hardboard that I purchased from Home Depot. Having the old door panels to use as a template was a big help. I traced the outline of the old door panels onto the hardboard and used a small handsaw to cut the shape for the new panels. I then used a hole saw to cut the holes for the window crank handle, door latch release handle, and arm rest mounting points. A piece of 1/4" high density scrim was used as a cushion between the hardboard and the black vinyl. The scrim is also necessary for the WO logo. Jim sewed through the scrim and vinyl when he made the WO logo. Without the scrim, the logo would barely be visible. Once Jim was finished sewing the logos, I used 1/4" stainless steel staples to attach the vinyl to the back of the hardboard. Another benefit to using scrim on your door panels is sound reduction. I was really surprised how much the interior noise level decreased after installing these panels.
Since making these panels, Jim and I have thought about making panels and selling them, that is, if there is a suitable demand. If you have an interest in purchasing panels for your PU or Wagon contact me by clicking here.
